I don’t understand my people the least. Don’t know how Mother is or what exactly is the matter with her. They tell me nothing. It really is maddening. It sems either nothing serious is the matter with her or something too bad for effective help. Seem my three months holiday abroad is definitely off. Last evening spoke with Martha on the ‘phone she was quite shocked to hear I wanted to leave the country. She is a pessimist so can’t be relied on, so are Gizi + co. They say however, that circumstances are far far worse than we imagine. There are heaps + heaps of wounded soldiers both here + in Szombathely and they don’t know where they are transported from as usually they are brought in at nights. Poor boys. As they say there are serious fights with the Roumaninans too. I suppose up in the north at the SubCarpathian border. Well, anyway, I can’t follow my plans of Switzerland. Such a pity. –

Went to see performance of Erzsébet in Magy. Szinh (?) it was very good and most appropriate or rather it hasn’t lost actuality. Or is it returning?

March 24th

People are being called in for military service again once cars taken. Spoke with Marietta yesterday who seemed to be rather upset on this account his elder bro. had to report and is already away and she expects the youngest is to be taken too. Two of their cars is taken too. – We are rather upset too on account of Mother who seems to have been unwell for weeks now and instead of seeing a Dr. just went on with the knowledge of this. I suppose she is afraid of something very bad and dares not face it. I do hope her fancies are just fancies.

March 21st

Nothing special happened last week. Spoke with Cica on the phone once + promised to go to see her but didn’t, so far at least. On Thursday after the Dr diedas lecture went to see Marietta. She was out. It was quite funny. Met her brother when just going. We had a little talk with the family as I had to go back to their office on account of some sort of an affair. This time it was he who mentioned marriage. I believe I gave quite a good show of maiden-ish shyness. As a matter of fact it was genuine, I wasn’t prepared for it. On Friday I went to the Congr. meeting in the morning and met Marietta there. We had quite a little argument over marriage as she was attending sermons on it at the Church of the Saved Heart. I dropped a few appropriate remarks on the beautiful character of her young brother. I have an idea that they are getting convinced of what I’m not at all sure that I’m getting terribly fond of their youngest member. But no I don’t wat to get cynical. I truly appreciate him, he is exactly what I might wish for a husband. The most remarkable amongst all my friends both whom I was friends with in the past and whom I happen to know at present. He is intelligent, good, deeply religious, reliable. But I don’t want get lyrical now as a reaction. Fact is that according to my opinion following items are not convenient in a future husband. Naturally same religion, little difference in age, about same degree but no lower of education, intelligence are necessary. Besides these it is good if one can feel sure that no matter what happens to one’s looks the husb-to-be will stay loyal; he won’t mind children but rather welcomes them and, what more is in a position to be able to afford them; no matter what happens will stick to his faith and won’t jeer if one tries to be a bit more zealous in these questions; appreciates or is likely to one’s sometimes extraordinary tastes and is intelligent enough to try to understand and explain one’s sometimes strange ideas. I could quote lot others but really the these first are the only really serious ones and I find them in him. So no matter how things stand I1m obliged to have some respect for the man who owns these desirable qualities and what I’ve been lucky enough to find represented in that young bro. of Marietta’s. So there. Nearly a week ago on 15th again our dear “friends” the Germans managed to excite the world by occupying Czechoslovaky in the most arrogant manner. How they are hated all along. They can’t be trusted any more, not that we ever did, it is only force that counts to them, rights and justice are thrown to the winds and so they’ll have their own punishments in time. I have an idea that we’ll see yet their decline, though it might shake the world. They are a nasty lot. However England and France deserve their abuse, they just talk and talk nothing else. Though lately they seem to be roused a bit, for they do use hard words at last. A great joy for us in the occupation at the Sub Carpathian territory, common frontier with Poland being realized thereby. As it can’t fit in with Germany’s plans it is sure to give some trouble though in future. Perhaps it will be the orange peel they break their necks on. Who knows.

Dad’s name day was on Sunday, both Mother + I + later Ervin happened to present the same red flowers causing hilarity with it. Later however I bought some mimosas and was cheated by the flower women accidentally. Nasty creature.

March 13th

As Ervin was away I couldn’t go out last week at least not in the mornings. On Tuesday, 7th, I couldn’t go to that lecture on aviation, though it is nearly the last. Went to the National Theatre saw Ampythrion (Kleist) with mixed feelings. Met Mr Dvorak that ? of a man with bade forebodings like usually. How can a person with so many worries get so fat. Or perhaps that’s what makes him put on weight. His wife and daughter were charming but I couldn’t speak much with them as found them too late. By mistake I thought there would be one more interval. The piece was not too convincing and lacked moral. Still, gave a chance for good laughs. On Wednesday Lotte gave our gymn class which meant hard work but most exhibiting. I liked it. Such a good change.

On Thursday after German I went to see Marietta who seemed to be everso proud of being of such use, replacing her brothers who are away with Ervin.

On Saturday again I went to see her as I promised after gymn. My back is aching again. Seems Marietta doesn’t mind giving up her job of replacing the bros.

Sunday that is yesterday passed in an unexpected way. Gyula came with the kid little Ervin from their way to the dentist’. They stayed quite long, we went to the cinema to an early performance. Later I went to Mrs Árva’s who was most distressed as no one was there to stay with her ??? grandmother and cinema tickets were ordered also. So when at last the uncle who was to come actually appeared we rushed and I did another cin. Never happened so far. I would have enjoyed another programme though much more I think, still it was a change.

Today it was quite funny beginning a funny customer appeared telling her most disgusting opinion about our office etc. Well I would have never thought a normal person of good breed seeing things in such a way. Which only shows she wasn’t of good breed for one and my taste having lost pure simplicity of not resenting though being hurled at it. Well, well. She was slightly squashy in the end though. Still I quite agree with people of superfluous sense of judgement. First impressions of places as well as persons are rather important and they might influence one’s attitude.

March 2nd

Yesterday’s gymn quite nice, Marcsi came too. Must have my lack looked to at last now that I have a rival at gymn. I have still a pian in it every time I try to lean backwards. Too bad. Was at the Society for Foreign Affairs this evening. The lecture itself wasn’t very exciting but the two others very good. Heared from the chairman that the new Pope, Pius XII. in person of Maria Eugene Pacelli has been elected. There was quite an enthusiastic applaud at this news. This election seemed to be a very rapid one. Some might have been a bit surprised, many expected some unknown person, but this is all for the best. He is a man who knows the world, travelled a lot and who is very well known too. Is not only an ascetic but a very strong personality. Little we thought at time of the Eucharistic Congress that in the Legate we were seeing our future Pope. I’m so happy. It is all for the best.

February 28th

On 19th evening a detective came to see Father as some good soul gave us up as aliens. Of course having been naturalized before the War everything was alright. Only the parents were most excited and upset seeing that someone is so hating us. On 20th our old family Dr came to tell he gave up his practise. On same day we went to a Mission Tea with Marietta and so Mrs Hajós was there also. It has been decided that Ervin goes to the Fair in Leipzig together with the Hauers. Was at Margareth’s today. Somehow she also seems to be under the influence of this race theory of German origins. – Our Pope died on 12th ?. A great loss but he pulled us through the most difficult times.

February 12th

On Monday the 6th little Ervin had a very high temperature on Tuesday too, it looked like pneumonia. On Tuesday morning I looked in to Cica’s, she was in bed having a slight attack of ‘flu. She told me long and terrible tales about the moral of “ladies” in the best society. At least in their crowd, don’t know if it is the “best” if I came to think of it. Mentioned a mutual acquaintance also a young Dr whom I used to like very much. But that was ages ago when he was a medical student. Such a pity people change so. As I see environment does such a lot in influencing the character if one drops the threads of religion. Still that man must have some good at the bottom of his heart for even if he lives in such a moral less way he must have the ideal of a pure woman + life for ?, otherwise he wouldn’t have given up his fiancée three days before the wedding. I know too, but as Cica says wants to get rid of her. Why on earth doesn’t he merry her. Awful mentioned reasons, I suppose. Poor man, in a way I’m sorry for him. He was quite a nice person when younger. –

On Wednesday went to keep an eye on the kids as Martha was out. Poor little Ervin is so thin with such big eyes. I was sorry for him. Really I believe I could bring up children in a much more efficient way than Martha. She doesn’t know a thing about them. Poor kids. –

On Thursday was at Marietta’s had a long confidential chat. Made (she) rude remarks about her brothers which I tried to explain in a more normal way. Met then both before departing. I quite like the younger one, this I told her too beforehand. So it was quite fun meeting them. Especially latter. As I found out he has blue eyes, never noticed before, though those are the first one usually remembers. Pity he is such a busy person –

By the way on Tuesday I was at the National Theatre also have seen John Knittels Via Mala. Quite a nice piece, only the ending somehow not quite satisfactory. The grandmother was the most well acted I should think, though all the others had more apparent success. – Saturday juts gymn in the evening. – Sunday the usual programme. Cinema.

February 3rd

A funny day. When coming home from church heared that there was a note in the letter box simply overflowing with envy, telling us to give the dog enough to eat. Ervin said we should take no notice of it, I told we should put out a small polite begging those who do, not to give the dog anything, adding that a gentleman did not write anonym letters. The boys in the factory solved the problem however by putting out a non too polite note telling the writer of the letter to eat the food he gives to the dog himself and if he didn’t like its bellowing let him come and do it himself. Many people stopped to read it I hope the one it was addressed to also. We read it in the evening only when Ervin took it off and brought it in whit great hilarity to let us see it. The porter from next house, who is employed by the gardener who is doing our garden just now, said it must be “that Kohn” on first floor who detests dogs. He however, doesn’t give him to eat, not much likely at least. But aren’t people nasty, it seems to get on his nerves that we have something for the anonym letter starts with mentioning our possessions. Perhaps he or she is ill, unhappy person. That makes him or her, for the handwriting is feminine, such. Otherwise there was nothing, except for a boy from the Nyilas party, asking for some paper trays fee, asked on the phone previously. I nearly turned him out. Am afraid my opinion is much the same for this too contradicted himself in the third minute. What they are is a vulgar mob as a friend put it, if they did that horrible thing, as is most likely of throwing a bomb at the Synagogue this evening. Hateful crowd.

February 2nd.

The normal programme, cemetery + cinema. The piece Kék róka in the Uránia not very good, at least I didn’t like this version the piece played in the theatre is much better. Found it most disillusioning and disgusting that people nearly cheered when seeing that devil Hitler on the screen. Indeed it can be said in our days too that „They do not know what they are doing”. By the way Chamberlains speech on Saturday last was followed by Hitlers on Monday. Former was that of a gentleman, I listened to it, latter that of the reverse. Though much milder than usually. They seem to be very offended that the English dare say that they are not afraid of them. Mother listened for a while, exactly at the part when he bellowed forth’ that he will not mind those priests who are with them, but will destroy (eltiporni) those who dare to be against their programme. Which means exactly what they are doing all the time. For a Catholic can’t submit if they wish to make him or her commit a mortal sin. This morning we listened to part of Bishop T. Toth’s sermon and he talked about this exactly. All but talked or mentioned openly the name of Germany.
