Had to give an offer on our products for use of the Euch. Cong. Told them at the same time I was willing to offer my English knowledge, but I’ll have to apply for a post at the Head Offices. Went to Cica afterwards. Was late for the av. lecture. There was a man at the door already who thought it was a shame to go in so late. But we had to wait about fifteen minutes so it was a pity. Aren’t men silly. If I’d have been alone I’d have gone in all the same. – Will have to see Dimi tomorrow, he’s getting me a document(?)

Vali’s exam. concert tonight. Quite interesting. She was sweet, but Vin’s friend was art itself. She is a bit tall though. But her voice is clear, strong, beautifully modulated and cultured. She sang a difficult pastor (?). She had a great success. – Vali was most unfortunate, there was nearly a panic at her turn. One of the reflectors or something of the sort was stuffed with paper, it caught fire and made a great smoke. There was getting quite a noise and some people left. Fortunately many kept their head, so it was alright in the end. – Went home alone as Ervin didn’t come to fetch me, met an old business friend of ours who came with me till the bus stop. When getting off I had an amusing incident.

The av. lectures are rather good, these Monday ones especially. The lecturer looked most handsome in his uniform. What a difference an attire (!) makes. I’ve found out he looks like Ernő. Remind me of him. We are getting on fine with my little fair neighbour. Talked to me most of the time, explained the “uplift force” (?), showed maps, accompanied me to the bus stop, etc. Most amusing.

Nothing all day. Letters to write. Av in the evening. Just found out how nice that blond fellow is, on my right. Never noticed him beforehand though he seemed to be making friendly advances all the time. Quite a charming fellow. The girl in front didn’t seem to like our friendly talk though poor kid’ll think the young man is being trapped. Passed them on the way from the lecture but didn’t show I noticed them. Again I went in company of the Colourless Demon, who’s quite charming too, in her own fashion.  – There are plenty of lonely young Men to be found everywhere. Wouldn’t Ingrid + Maria laugh.

2nd

Had a row with Mother, who strangely enough thought I was going to work instead of visiting Ami. I really can’t understand her. Yesterday she had nothing against my going. So I went on bus got here in the last minute, nearly. Only four people were there. Ami was sweet. My presentiments were right. I nearly stayed at home on that account partly, but thought I wouldn’t let myself be influenced by anything in future. Vin. however, was gone, stayed until noon only. Our cin. was off, I went alone to see the silliest piece I’ve seen for long time, in the neighbouring cinema (Szerelemből nősültem). What a day again. – It is cool and windy.

March 1st

This afternoon Vin. ’phoned at a most unexpected time to inquire why didn’t I go to see Ami, whom he went to see. She said I always kept my word. Too bad of Martha to have made all this fuss about my not going to see her. Poor Vin went to the Clinic on account of my visit only in spite of a sore throat or something of the sort. He made me promise to go tomorrow. I’ve an idea that he won’t be there that time, we’ll be quits then.

Too lazy to get up early, went to the noon mass. A good walk to the cemetery and the church which intrigued me since long. It looked quite near the East Station but was a quarter of an hour’s distance quite near the first cross road leading home. – Went to Martha’s party a bit tired, managed to be the first. Five minutes after, the next people arrived and all of them in the next twenty minutes at a few minutes interval each. What a gathering of relatives. It was funny. Poor Feri bá’ got the worst of it, he was the centre of all raillery. Miki had to be off after the meal, or rather in the middle of it. Ernő was there too. He is on the verge of getting married again, or rather, wishes to be, but on account of his divorce can’t be in church. It seems the girl has some character and won’t have him otherwise. Of course he can’t get an annullation of his former marriage, though his divorced wife seems to de her best too, so the poor man is disgusted with the priests. Speak of feminine logic indeed. What about men when their own sweet person is in question. However, I feel sorry for the poor man, and can quite understand his outburst. It is terribly hard if the only way out is such that one’s nature is against it. Besides one rarely has a clear head in such cases. He was awfully nice otherwise promised to order me a glass-set on reduced price if going to Ajka. I hope he is going. –

It was quite a jolly party we had such laughs over Jolán néni’s + Gyurka bá’s descriptions of their holiday and moving to another house in Csobánka. Poor Feri bá’ he has a lovely temper he tooks all of it so good naturedly. – Little Martha looked most pretty, they had a party the former night, that is why their parents were still in such party spirits. – We went home in the most shocking way. As we meant to take the Pálffys + Ernő home, and there were too many of us we had to sit on each other’s knees, or rather Gizi and I had to on the mens. Gizi néni sat in front but we advised her to follow our example and ask one more person into our car. We stopped on the way to show off before Feri bá, Jolán néni + the others. When we dropped Gizi + co Ernő told all his wives. I haven’t got it all clear, I’m afraid neither has he.  – Ami is ill and in the Herzog Clinic. I’ll have to tell Vin. and go to see her.
